Understanding refine feature

Hi Mariannne :-),

I guess I did not word my question correctly. I understand how it works, but I am wondering as to why there is an option to utilize it or not. If the box is not clicked does it hamper production? I guess what I am asking, in your opinion, is it better to utilize the refine feature or not?
