Your idea for a specialized bacteria glossary is actually quite easy to do.

Caveat: I'm unfamiliar with WordPad and NotePad, since I work in Word. If you don't have Word and those two won't do what I'm describing, this may not work for you.

If you are able to open your glossary using Word, here's all you need to do:

Before you start, make a backup copy of your glossary. If something doesn't turn out the way you expect, you'll have a fresh copy to try again.

The trick is, you ARE replacing something. First, show your formatting marks (either click the backwards P on your tool bar, or if you can't find that, go to Tools|Options|Formatting Marks and put a check mark in the All box). Notice that there is a paragraph mark (what you get when you press the return/enter key) right before each abbreviation. Since it is at the end of the previous line, we don't think of it as being "right before," but it is.

Thus, all you need to do is replace the sequence "paragraph + abbreviation" with "paragraph + bb + abbreviation."

Here's how:

First, highlight all the lines in your glossary that you want to put bb in front of.

Next, bring up the Edit|Replace dialog box. In the Find box, type "^p" (that's a caret, shift-6). This tells Word to look for a paragraph mark. In the Replace box, type "^pbb". (This will replace the paragraph mark with a paragraph mark followed by bb, which will appear right before the abbreviation.)

Click on Replace All and sit back and watch it magically appear!

Save your glossary.Remember it has to be saved as text, not a Word document. If Word complains that you might lose formatting, just ignore it. Word is a fussbudget when it comes to saving things as text. And remember that you want your finished glossary to end in .glo, not .txt or .doc - you can change the name after you save it, if you need to.

Happy bacteria-ing!
Pam
