Unwanted changes made to glossary in Notepad

Hello,
I used Notepad to make a correction to several items in my glossary using the Replace option. When I saved the glossary, it had changed several hard returns in entries to �� and the only choice is to continue without the line. This choice would cause me to lose several entries.

It looks to me like this was where there were hard returns in the glossary entry that were added using Alt + from Bayscribe.

I tried to repair this is notepad but was unable to without changing each entry separately and there are several.

I was able to pull up my backup and rename the glossary to get my working glossary again, but I wonder what caused this and how can I have this not happen in the future?
