In summary, Susie and all others whose life is made more complicated by arrogant Microsoft engineers (who believe that all of us are as stupid as their "Office Assistant"), my recommendation is always to uncheck hide file extensions for known file types.... I absolutely agree! I'm not even as cute as their Office Assistant! :-) All I can say about Wordpad adding .txt is that it used to do that for me too! I would have to go into Windows Explorer to remove the .txt extension. I don't know why it no longer happens, unless it has to do with unchecking the hide extensions, as we've been talking about. I thought I did that a long time ago, though, and I seem to remember having the same problem until a matter of months ago. I can't think of anything else I did that might have "fixed" the problem.
