Transitioning from Smartype to IT
Hi Stacy. This is my first time checking in with the forum. Hope you are still checking in for responses. In June of 1999 I had to leave my safety blanket combination of DOS and WP5.1+, and Smartype, going into Windows 98, Word Perfect 9 (Suite 2000), and Instant Text. Was a little confused at first, because of the ease of using and moving around with ST, but had chosen IT because of its claims about importing. I did not want to have to reinvent the wheel, as I had been using ST for some time. (Actually was a little disappointed they had not moved into the Windows environment in time for me to use them). Marianne helped me with understanding the import feature. Then, with usage, I realized there were some items which did not transfer but quickly edited or culled them out, and rebuilt in the new IT method to accommodate the way my thinking pattern would best remember things. As an example, in ST I had "yowm" which expanded to "-year-old-white male" and would type the numeric value of the patient's age and the yowm and it would back up a space and expand the appreviation. Now I had to type "y24" to expand to "24-year-old" and then "wtm" for white male, but accomplished what I needed all the same -- just an adjustment in mental attitude. As I used IT more, I realized more ways I could utilize it, including spelling reference, dosage references, and although there are still a few features I preferred with ST, this is a MUCH MORE POWERFUL PROGRAM. I like to think of IT as Smartype ON STEROIDS. It just took me a little time to realize how it functions and the possibilities are endless. Each day I am adding things to it and streamlining its operation. I can't imagine working without Instant Text anymore! Hope this was helpful. Judy
