IT, MedPen, and Word 2000 -- quick linking.

Hi Patty,

I've been using IT for quite a while now, and MedPen and Word 2000 (also in Windows 98) for several months. I have to say that MP and IT make my life SO much easier. I actually prefer WP9, but don't have a choice at the moment and have had to get used to Word again -- MedPen is certainly helping.

When I first starting using Word 2000, I was annoyed to find that it did not automatically link IT to whichever document I happened to be working on (in contrast to Word 97 and WP9). For instance, if I opened a second document IT remained linked to the first, and if I had already closed the first IT would be linked to the original blank document that Word opens all on its lonesome. Imagine my joy when I added MedPen! I find that now when I close a document and start another one, I simply hit "Alt slash" twice -- first time brings me to IT's editor window, second brings me back to my new document with IT already linked.

So, this is what I do in detail. Open MedPen, which automatically opens Word 2000. Start a session and complete the demographics screen. Let MP start the first document. (Notice that at this stage all document names begin with "I_"). Then I open IT, hit Enter (to lose the Tips screen), ALT and the period to bring up the Link dialog box, then "I" (as the first letter of the document) and Enter.

This is all much quicker than it sounds, and you only have to do it once per session. After this, I complete my report, run Exit, begin my next report and, once MP has opened the main document, hit ALT and slash (twice) and I am linked. There is no need to bring up the link dialog box again to link to the new document. I'm not technically minded enough to know why linking IT to a document in Word 2000 is easier with MP running -- I'm just grateful that it is! :)

One little "problem" that comes to mind -- though it's no biggie -- is a conflict with ONE of the Hotkeys in MP and IT. When in the Glossary Viewer (when about to add or edit a glossary entry) ALT+N (for Next during a search) gets you the "Individual Note" query from MP. None of the other Hotkeys are affected, so I have become used to using the mouse for this one item.

Just FYI, I have no affiliation with Vann Joe or MedPen, apart from being a very satisfied (and possibly vocal ?!?) customer. I do provide occasional technical support for Jean and Marianne on Instant Text. Mostly though, I am simply an MT using a couple of great programs to make my day run more smoothly.

Good luck -- I'm sure you'll soon wonder how you ever transcribed "pre" IT and MP. :)

Feel free to email me if I can help in any way,

MarieR
