I like your proposals and I am wondering how this interacts with line-number selection. I see no problem with:

k22 = 02-02-99 or
k22= 02/02/99
k827 = 08-27-99 or 08-27-98

because k is rather rare. With f2 giving

February 2, 1999
February 2, 1998

you seem to have avoided the problem also because most entries will start with two or more letters.
