The technique described by Sharon in Transcription Musings 4 can be viewed in two ways with Instant Text:
  1. As a way to formulate glossaries
  2. As a mental technique to follow when typing an abbreviation for an Instant Text glossary

Both Sharon and Jon Knowles view it as (1) a way to formulate a glossary — Incidentally, Sharon's technique is very close to Jon's abcz where you take the first three letters and the last one to form the abbreviation.

For the moment let's see what happens if you use it as (2) a mental technique only. That is, you do not modify the IT glossary and just use it as a discipline to type abbreviations:

ambambulate 2
ambn ambulation3
ambd ambulated1
ambg ambulating1
ambs ambulates 1
amby ambulatory1
ambl ambulational 7

The numbers show the position where you get the word in the Word advisory. This assumes that the words are Word entries in the glossary, all with the short a. You just enter the letters that Sharon recommends and watch the position where the word appears in the Word Advisory. (To do the simulation, we took Sharon's glossary and copied the words to the Word Section.)

As in Marianne's prior reply on this subject, the IT rule does quite well. The only case where it does not come to the top is "ambulational" because all other entries also have an l. Of course, the IT approach might use a syllabic approach like ambnl to get it to the top. Again, as Marianne said, this means that you can use the Word section almost all the time and use dedicated short forms only for very frequent ones such as dx for diagnosis.

Going back to approach (1) now: If you are going to use this approach do not do it manually! Produce your glossary by a compilation as usual and then use the Glossary Workshop to do this word conversion to phrases automatically.

You've paid for these powerful tools and you may as well use them and do in a few seconds what could take a day of work! :-)
