pause function within text using MSWord 2003

I must have some function clicked or something that makes this not work after saving and reopening.

the ctrl + F9 entry within Word 2003 placed within document will put in a "pause" I can see it but when I save and retrieve it is gone and also when I try the Shift F11 to see if it will INDEED work even thought not visible, it will not work. Any ideas.
