Okay in safe mode can indicate an add-in that is conflicting with Word

Opening in safe mode bypasses any add-ins that otherwise load when opening the normal way. You can move most add-ins out of Word's Startup folder (one by one) to check for conflicts. In Word 2003 and earlier, go to Tools/Templates and Add-ins to see what is loading with Word.

If you're running Norton AntiVirus or SystemWorks, open that program and make sure the Office Plug-in is not enabled in Tools/Miscellaneous.
