I've never used Shorthand so can't give you any information there, unfortunately, although I don't see any point in getting both programs.
Personally, I think it's a good idea to get used to using an expansion program whilst still a student, provided you don't do it too early. Once you are about halfway through your studies (so you no longer feel overwhelmed by it all) seems like a good time. Starting your first MT job is stressfull enough -- having to learn an expansion program at the same time can be a bit much.
The only caveat I have is that you might end up with a job where your choice of expansion program proves to be the "wrong" one -- maybe it only works in Windows and your employer uses DOS, or possibly they have their own package of software and there would be no need for your own. OTOH, I believe the majority of work is now done in Windows (or soon will be), so.......ya pays your money and ya takes your choice! LOL!
On the plus side, Instant Text works with many programs, so if you start working in Word but have to change to Word Perfect for Windows (or vice versa), there's no problem as IT can be used with both -- you won't have lost all your expansions. :)
Good luck with the rest of your course,
