I realized that although I did offer you another methodology for dealing with Q&A and *beginning* dashes, it still doesn't solve your issue with wanting to (I assume) be able to type the double dash directly after an ending word, then be able to type an IT as the very next character and have it expand.
If Emmanuel is able to add that to the list of expansion or terminator key options, that would be great. But if not, here's a possible Plan B and Plan C for those scenarios, one of which will help to keep your hands on the home row:
Plan B: Of course, you could use the default Shift Space option to reset the typing directive after typing the dash. But if that keystroking process slows down your momentum at all, then you might like the next option below.
Plan C: Add a new entry with -- as the short. Your entry will look like:
--{ResetTypingContext}{NoSpacing}
After typing your two dashes, simply press the semicolon key - faster than Plan B because it's a single keystroke, plus the semicolon key is probably baked into your hand rhythm and won't slow you down at all, whereas the double-keytap of Plan B might.
That would allow you to type "--;zx;" and get the behavior you want with just one extra keystroke. It would also work for lines beginning with a dash, because you might also want to start the line with a short that needs to expand. In fact, now I just realized I should have added that to my kk/qq and aa shortcuts for your scenario, so I'm going to update that as well as soon as I post this new message.
In your case, since you don't have spaces before or after your -- entries, that might work best whether you continue with your same system or even if you decide to switch over to my suggested system for typing the kk/qq and aa shortcuts.
I hope that makes sense!
