No answers, just commiseration
I haven't been to the forums in a while, but was alerted there was a post about a similar problem to one I had experienced in the past. Link: http://fitaly.com/board/itmainforum/posts/1015.html (posted 11/30/2003 by Kathy) (how DO you guys make those links active?) I'm running Word 2000 Pro/Win 2000/IT V/Norton SW 2000. My problem cropped up out of the blue after a routine Norton Virus update. As you can see if you read the thread, I had many false hopes along the way of what was causing it, but in the end, it eventually resolved itself due to nothing I did that I could tell. I had disabled the Norton AV plug-in for MS office as (I believe) Reny suggested, but it made no difference at first--I did eventually wonder if a few reboots later something finally kicked in. My workaround at the time was to *unlink* IT when I had to open a new template and then *relink*. I never thought to try opening a template with my mouse so don't know if that made a difference (as you stated), but I too found that when my system was hung up and I opened Task Manager, that unhung me instantly, as you alluded to. I also found opening an existing Word document was affected just like opening a new template. I don't recall that anything changed in my computer (besides replacing the faulty auxillary hard drive noted in one of the posts) over those nearly-3 months, but of course continued Norton virus definition updates-- so I can't really help you other than to say I just hung in there and it eventually corrected itself, and maybe linking and unlinking in the meantime will serve as an adequate, if subsatisfactory, workaround. Feel free to contact me with questions. --Kathy
