Hidden file extensions in Windows XP

I see from your email that you have Windows XP. Microsoft have, in my opinion, dumbed down Windows XP and is trying to save us from ourselves by hiding lots of stuff from us. :(

The default is to hide extensions of known file types and it was one of the first things I changed when I got XP. I think doing the same will take care of things for you.

  1. Go to Start/Control Panel/Folder Options/View
  2. Under Hidden Files and Folders
    choose Show hidden files and folders
  3. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types

That should help you to at least see what you are trying to do in Windows Explorer.

When I save a glossary in Wordpad and replace the .txt extension with .glo, it doesn’t add the .txt back, thankfully. Making the change to Windows, as above, might take care of that for you. If it doesn’t, it will at least mean you can make the necessary changes in Windows Explorer
