With the powerful new computers appearing these days at incredible prices, this is a question I am getting frequently: How do I move IT to my new computer?

Installing Instant Text on a new computer is very easy, assuming you still have your IT installation disk. So, on your new computer, use the IT installation disk and install IT just as you did the first time.

Installing your glossaries is also very easy. If you have not done a back-up recently, this is a good time to do it. As I said in a previous tip:

To backup glossaries, always use the Windows Explorer:
Step Comment
1 In the Windows Explorer, highlight the name of the glossaries you want to backup.
2 Right-click and select Copy
3 Go to the destination folder or floppy drive in the Windows Explorer
4 Right-click and select Paste

For step 1, note that you don't need to include the IT glossaries that are on the installation disk since they will be reinstalled. Then:

Restore glossaries to the new computer with the Windows Explorer:
Step Comment
1 In the Windows Explorer, select the floppy drive and highlight the glossaries that you want to restore.
2 Right-click and select Copy
3 Go to the destination folder: C:\InstText\Glossary
4 Right-click and select Paste

You can transfer any modified or imported glossary. Each abbreviation list you have imported originally from PRD, FlashForward, Smartype, Explode-It, etc. is an Instant Text glossary and can be handled in the same way.

Note that you don't need to do all the importing again! (I frequently see people trying to get their prd files... This is not needed. You did it the first time and now that you have the glossaries, you just transfer them.)

Finally, to use Instant Text with your glossaries, open them one by one and save the active glossary list. You may also need to go to the Options dialog and select the same options as on the old computer.

There is another step to do if your IT installation diskette is a bit old: You need to apply the most recent IT revisions to bring your version up to the level of version 3.5 - follow the link below. In particular, note that only version 3.5 supports Windows Me.
