IT automatically back spaces after punctuation .

Whether I use automatic spacing or not IT automatically back spaces when I type the first letter following the punctuation mark. For example, PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: I have this in IT glossary. When I bring it up with automatic spacing on (with 2 spaces identified in preferences) reveal codes indicate 2 spaces. As soon as I type the first letter of the sentence ( T for The patient) I lose a space. If I type an extra space to compensate for the space that is usually taken away, I don't lose that space and I wind up with three spaces. ANY HELP?
