Automatic spacing and entries ending with a colon

Jim,

Whether I use automatic spacing or not, IT automatically backspaces when I type the first letter following the punctuation mark.

Instant Text reacts to the punctuation you type and puts it in the right place. As long as you have not typed the punctuation, IT keeps a tentative space, as is needed for the case where you just continue your sentence (that is, most of the time).

For example, "PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:" I have this in an IT glossary.

If you include the colon as part of your entry, you will only get one space, just as after any glossary expansion (the tentative space that stay).

When I bring it up with automatic spacing on, (with 2 spaces identified in preferences) reveal codes indicate 2 spaces.

If the entry is "PHYSICAL EXAMINATION" and you type a colon, you will get the 2 spaces as set in Preferences after typing the colon.

If the entry is "PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:" (colon included), you will get 1 space.

If you enter the entry as "PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: " (with a final space), the space will only be kept by Instant Text if it is a non-breaking space (Alt 0160).

As soon as I type the first letter of the sentence ( T for The patient) I lose a space. If I type an extra space to compensate for the space that is usually taken away, I don't lose that space and I wind up with three spaces. ANY HELP?

To be sure to get the 2 spaces after an entry like "PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:" you need to make sure that you add a non-breaking space(Alt 0160) after the colon and that you have automatic spacing on. Then you will get the 2 spaces you want.

I hope this clarifies the two different ways of getting the spaces as you want them.

Marianne
