Why do glossaries open in the list even when you don't want them?

If I am typing a particular doctor's letters of course I am going to make sure his or her glossary is open. However, I notice that as I continue typing, for some strange reason an extra glossary will open and the highlight will also move to that glossary and off the glossary for the doctor whose letters I am typing? Why does this happen and how can I stop it from happening.

For example, I will be typing on Dr. Jones and her glossary will be opened (by me after I open instant text) if her glossary does not open when I open IT. And for a while her glossary is the only one open, but as the session of transcribing progresses, I will type in an abbreviation for a word or phrase such as ds for diagnostic studies and another expansion will fill in and I wonder why and I look at the glossary list and not only has another glossary opened, but the highlight has also moved from the doctor's glossary I was originally typing onto the unsolicited glossary.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me.
