Instant Text Glossary Exchange

This glossary contains a list of 13,000 abbreviations developed by Mary Morken and released to the public domain by Narratek. A summary of the rules is given below.

For long words, the rule is to use the first two letters of the first part and the first two letters of the second main part (accented syllables):

	adca	adenocarcinoma
	chcy	cholecystitis
	hyco	hypercholesterolemia

Additional letters are used for duplicates:

	hoth	hypothyroid
	hothe	hypothermia
	inla	inferolateral
	inlam	interlaminar

Endings are used for words. For example, d for ed, g for ing, and j for tion:

	intud	intubated
	intug	intubating
	intuj	intubation

For a phrase with two words, the first two letters of the first word and the first two letters of the second word are used:

	abpa	abdominal pain
	brar	brachial artery
	dere	detached retina

Phrases with three or more words use initial letters as in glossaries compiled by Instant Text:

	tpwp	the patient was placed
	tyvm	thank you very much
	iot	in order to
	pdnh	please do not hesitate
